It’s a brand new year and you may still be deciding what resolution to take on, but what about your habits at home? Your home affects your emotional well-being - home is where life happens! Take some simple steps to make sure your home is ready to take on 2018 with you.
Let’s face it - it’s a new year and it’s time to de-clutter the house. We always tell ourselves we’re going to do it, but it’s time to make an effort. Go through every room in the house and separate items into throw-away, donate, and sell piles.
This is a huge step... but don't stop there.
When purchasing new things, think twice. How badly do you need it? Do you have a place for it? New clothing item? Try the one-in, one-out closet rule. If you buy a new shirt you must get rid of an old one! You won’t even miss it.
We're sure you always remember to clean out your dryer filter. But, did you know that you should also clean the vents/ducts behind the dryer?
Why? Lint is highly combustible. This accounts for more than 15,000 household fires each year, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Don’t forget to check your smoke detectors and make sure your fire extinguisher works, too.
Saving money is a common resolution. Why not start with saving money at home?
It’s easy - try setting your home computer to revert to sleep mode when you’re not using it, and unplug electronics when you're not using them.
Make a habit of always turning off the lights when you leave a room. Can’t get your kids to do it? Every time they don’t turn off their room light, they owe you something (50 cents for example, now you’re making money)!
Maybe it’s time to start some new habits. Think of something that you wish you would take the time to do everyday and do it!
Maybe it’s making your bed, putting all of the dishes in the dishwasher each night before bed, wiping down the counter each morning while you’re making your coffee, or cleaning out the fridge on Sundays.
These things only take a few minutes! Remember - habits take time. It’s time to get started!
