As storm season approaches, it’s crucial for everyone to take the necessary precautions to ensure safety and protect their homes. At ResiHome, we want to help you prepare for any severe weather. Follow these tips to stay safe and secure during storm season.

Stay Informed

Sign Up for Local Weather Alerts

Stay updated on weather conditions by signing up for local weather alerts. This way, you’ll always be in the know about any incoming storms. Additionally, visit the National Hurricane Center website for official storm tracking and updates.

Understand Hurricane Watch and Warning

  • Hurricane Watch: Hurricane conditions are possible within the next 48 hours.
  • Hurricane Warning: Hurricane conditions are expected within the next 36 hours.

Knowing the difference between these alerts helps you gauge how much time you have to prepare before the storm hits.

Plan Ahead

Know Your Evacuation Route

Familiarize yourself with the evacuation routes in your area. Planning ahead of time can make a significant difference in ensuring a safe and orderly evacuation if necessary.

Take Inventory of Your Personal Property

Review your rental insurance policies and take inventory of your personal property. Taking photos and keeping receipts of high-value items will be beneficial if you need to make an insurance claim.

Write Down Emergency Phone Numbers

Keep a list of emergency phone numbers on the refrigerator or near every phone in your house. This list should include local emergency services, family members, and other important contacts.

Prepare Emergency Supplies

Non-Perishable Supplies to Keep on Hand

Stock up on non-perishable emergency supplies, including:

  • Batteries
  • Prescription drugs
  • Drinking water
  • Canned foods
  • Paper products
  • Coats and blankets
  • Flashlights or alternative lighting sources
  • Medical supplies

The Red Cross provides a helpful checklist for emergency supplies, ensuring you have everything you need.

Secure Your Home

Take Necessary Measures to Protect Your Home

To minimize potential damage during a storm, make sure to:

  • Board up windows and install hurricane shutters if needed (Note: this is the resident's responsibility).
  • Clear your yard of items that could blow around during the storm, such as bikes, lawn furniture, grills, propane tanks, potted plants, and building materials. Move these items inside or under shelter.
  • Park your vehicles against the garage door and keep the gas tank full.

During the Storm

Stay in a central room or in a room that’s on the downwind side of the house. This reduces the risk of injury from shattered windows or flying debris. And don't forget about your pets! Make sure they are brought inside before a storm hits.

By following these guidelines, you can help protect yourself, your family, and your home during storm season. At ResiHome, we are committed to your safety and well-being. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please feel free to reach out to us. Stay safe!
